Summary

The war hasn't had much effect on the farm but the atmosphere still feels different. Albert and his mom are fighting about the dads drinking and how he treats Joey. Than one night Alberts dad took Joey to town to sell to the army. They accepted but Albert had heard Joey's cries. He asked if he could sign up for the army just to be with his horse but they said he was too young but they could use that spirit when he's older and Albert just asks if they will take care of Joey, than they take him away
