The war is moving away from the farm and Joey and Topthorn are getting less work. Eventualy the war leaves completely and so does the hospital. Joey and Topthorn are allowed to stay on the farm in comemoration for there work and they become farm horses. They are then taken away by german soldiers and are used to pull guns. It is a terrible job and Topthorn is weakening. When they stop at a stream Topthorn collapses and dies. Joey refuses to leave his side and Friedrich, who had taken a massive interest in the horses, tries to drag Joey away but the horse wont budge. When Frierich eventually gives up and runs he gets shot and now Joey is all alone.
