In war it seems horses are either loved or pointless. If you are at war and you see an enemy's horse you will probably leave it when if it was your horse you would love it dearly and it would seem like the only good thing about the war. This probably happens in real life because there is no point in taking a horse hostage and if it is yours it is the only sanity that you have in your new world.
